Biography:
Dr. Werner is the Vice-President for Discovery Research at Celtaxsys, Inc., an ATDC biotechnology company based in the Ford Environmental Science and Technology Building on the campus of Georgia Tech. Prior to joining Celtaxsys, Dr. Werner served as Associate Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics at The Rockefeller University in New York, a position he held for more than 11 years. Dr. Werner is an internationally recognized structural biologist and protein biochemist. He is a recognized expert in understanding the relationship between protein function and human disease, particularly in the areas of the regulation of gene expression and in programmed cell death. His most recent accomplishments established the structural and functional mechanism for tumor necrosis factor (TNF) death receptor signaling in humans. Dr. Werner is a graduate of the University of Southern California (B. S. suma cum laude) and the University of California, Berkeley (Ph.D. magna cum laude) and held positions at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health and the Rockefeller University. He is the author of more than 50 publications, 10 reviews and book chapters and is the recipient of numerous private and public research grants totaling more than $3M. Dr. Werner is also the recipient of several notable awards and prizes, including the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Foundation Scholar Award (1997) and the $1M W.M. Keck Foundation Distinguished Young Scholar Award (2000).
