About The School Of Biology
The School of Biology is a unit of the College of Sciences with 31faculty members. The School is located in the Cherry Emerson Building, adjacent to the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences, and the new Environmental Science and Technology building. Together this complex forms the center of bioscience research at Georgia Tech and houses interdisciplinary research teams of biologists, chemists, earth scientists, bioengineers, and environmental engineers. In addition to classrooms and teaching laboratories, research laboratories are available within the Cherry Emerson building for molecular biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, and ecology research.
Off
campus, coastal facilities are available to conduct research and field
studies at
the Marine Institute on
Fields of Specialization: Faculty research interests are within four broad categories: Ecology, Evolution and Behavior (sensory and chemical ecology, marine sciences), Microbiology (environmental, molecular), Cell and Molecular Biology (including genetics), Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (including genomic analysis and structural analysis) . Each field of specialization includes core courses, seminars and research. Students can conduct research and perform course work in more than one field. In addition, the relatively small size of the School facilitates close interactions between students and faculty. The School of Biology faculty actively collaborate with faculty in other Schools and Departments on campus. This gives students and researchers in the School a more diverse scientific exposure than they might have elsewhere. Such collaborators are included in the School of Biomedical Engineering, the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as other units on campus. |
