Undergraduate Curriculum
The undergraduate biology curriculum at Georgia Tech is designed to provide a comprehensive general education in the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences and a strong foundation in the principles of modern biology. Shortly after arriving at Tech, each biology major is assigned an advisor, who will assist in planning the program of study and helping the student to achieve career goals.
The curriculum is designed so that students receive a broad exposure to important biological concepts in the core courses taken during the first two years. Students are urged to complete these core courses no later than the middle of their junior year (see the Required Core Courses). This will allow students to gain the experience and perspective to make sound career decisions for advanced study during their junior and senior years. This also is the time that biology majors build depth in a particular subject through a research experience in project lab or a faculty mentorship. The research experience is the capstone that allows students to integrate practical skills with theoretical knowledge and is typically taken in the senior year along with Senior Seminar. Students may also include the International Option, Research Option, or Business Option as part of their curriculum.
